INFO ON RECOMMENDED SHINGLES
The below shingles are those that we recommend for installation. All of the below shingles are not only rated as Class 3 or Class 4 for impact resistance, but also offer 110-130 mph wind resistance as well as resistance to Algae growth (streaks).
Note: Insurance companies often give discounts for homes with Class 3/Class 4 rated shingles. We suggest you call your agent to see how much you can save!!!!
CLASS 3 IMPACT SHINGLES
- 1) Owens Corning Duration – Class 3 Impact Rating, 130 MPH Wind, 25 year Algae Resistance, Sure-Nail Technology “fabric” Nail Strip
- 2) Certainteed Landmark Pro – Class 3 Impact Rating, 110 MPH Wind, 30 Year Algae Resistance
- 3) Malarkey Highlander – Class 3 Impact Rating, 110 MPH Wind, 15 year Algae Resistance, 2X Nailing Area, more adhesive bonds between shingles, uses “rubberized asphalt material” that is more flexible
Note 1: There is minimal cost difference between the Owens Corning Duration and Certainteed Landmark Pro Shingles.
Note 2: Total roofing cost for Malarkey Highlander shingles run about a $1,000 more for a typical house (30 Squares) than the Owens Corning or Certainteed Shingles above.
CLASS 4 IMPACT SHINGLES
- 1) Malarkey Vista – Class 4 Impact Rating, 10% thicker than typical shingle, 110 MPH Wind, 25 Year Algae, 2X Nailing Area, more adhesive bonds between shingles, uses “rubberized asphalt material” that is more flexible
Note: Total roofing cost for Malarkey Vista shingles run about $1,500-$2,000 more for a typical house (30 Squares) than the Class 3 Owens Corning or Certainteed shingles above.
CLASS 4 IMPACT “PREMIUM” SHINGLES
- 1) Certainteed Grand Manor – Class 4 Impact Rating, Thick 5-Layer design, 110 MPH Wind, 30 Year Algae Resistance, designed to replicate look of natural Slate
Note 1: These shingles are super thick and come 5 bundles per Square (100 sq. feet) instead of 3 bundles per Square (like most other shingles).
Note 2: Because of the 5-Layer design of these shingles, the installation cost (labor and material) is significantly more than all the other above listed shingles. Total roofing cost would be 2X – 2.5X the cost of installing any of the Class 3 shingles above.
